United Airlines is making 2026 a significant network-expansion year, adding or restoring routes across Europe, Japan, Latin America and the Caribbean.

For travelers, the most interesting part is not simply more flights between major hubs. Several routes provide nonstop access to destinations that normally require a connection, including Split, Bari, Santiago de Compostela, Sapporo and Cartagena.

Here is the Natifly Daily guide to the key United Airlines route additions and returning services for 2026.

Europe: new routes launched for summer 2026

United began several new transatlantic routes during spring 2026.

Newark to Split, Croatia

  • Route: Newark/New York to Split
  • Airport codes: EWR–SPU
  • Launch: April 30, 2026
  • Frequency: three flights per week

United describes this as its first-ever nonstop service between Newark/New York and Split, giving travelers more direct access to Croatia's Dalmatian Coast.

Newark to Bari, Italy

  • Route: Newark/New York to Bari
  • Airport codes: EWR–BRI
  • Launch: May 1, 2026
  • Frequency: four flights per week

Bari gives United passengers direct access to Puglia and a useful gateway for southern Italy.

Newark to Glasgow, Scotland

  • Route: Newark/New York to Glasgow
  • Airport codes: EWR–GLA
  • Launch: May 8, 2026
  • Frequency: daily

United says this is the only nonstop service on the route.

Washington-Dulles to Reykjavik, Iceland

  • Route: Washington-Dulles to Reykjavik
  • Airport codes: IAD–KEF
  • Launch: May 21, 2026
  • Frequency: daily

This adds another direct transatlantic option from the Washington area.

Newark to Santiago de Compostela, Spain

  • Route: Newark/New York to Santiago de Compostela
  • Airport codes: EWR–SCQ
  • Launch: May 27, 2026
  • Frequency: three flights per week

The flight provides direct access to Galicia and one of Spain's most important historic pilgrimage destinations.

United said its 2026 schedule would offer service from the United States to 36 destinations in Europe including Greenland, with up to 210 daily flights during peak periods.

Returning destinations from United's earlier expansion

United also brought back several distinctive seasonal routes introduced during its previous expansion.

Returning summer services include:

  • Tokyo-Narita to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
  • Newark to Faro, Portugal
  • Newark to Madeira
  • Newark to Palermo, Italy
  • Newark to Bilbao, Spain
  • Newark to Nuuk, Greenland

The strategy shows that United is continuing to test and maintain international destinations outside the usual major gateways.

Japan: Chicago-Narita and San Francisco-Sapporo

Japan is another major part of United's 2026 network growth.

Chicago to Tokyo-Narita

United announced a new daily year-round flight from Chicago O'Hare to Tokyo-Narita.

  • Route: ORD–NRT
  • Planned start: October 24, 2026
  • Frequency: daily
  • Planned aircraft: Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner

The flight complements United's existing Chicago-Tokyo Haneda service and creates more connection opportunities through Narita.

San Francisco to Sapporo

United also announced seasonal nonstop service between San Francisco and Sapporo.

  • Route: SFO–CTS
  • Planned start: December 11, 2026
  • Frequency: three flights per week
  • Season: winter, December through March
  • Planned aircraft: Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

United says this will be the first nonstop service between the continental United States and Sapporo.

For winter visitors, Hokkaido ski travelers and repeat Japan visitors, this is one of the most distinctive route announcements of 2026.

Houston-Caracas returns after a long absence

United announced the restoration of nonstop service between Houston and Caracas, Venezuela.

  • Route: Houston to Caracas
  • Airport codes: IAH–CCS
  • Announced start: August 11, 2026
  • Frequency: daily
  • Aircraft: Boeing 737 MAX 8

United previously served Venezuela for more than two decades before suspending service in June 2017.

The airline announced the following schedule:

  • UA1046 Houston to Caracas: 23:45 departure and 05:30 arrival the following day
  • UA1045 Caracas to Houston: 08:00 departure and 12:30 arrival

United's announcement stated that the service was subject to government approval.

Travelers should therefore verify live operating status before arranging a trip around the route.

Cartagena gets new nonstop links from two United hubs

United announced two new nonstop routes to Cartagena, Colombia, starting in December.

Washington-Dulles to Cartagena

  • Route: IAD–CTG
  • Planned start: December 17, 2026
  • Initial frequency: four flights per week
  • Announced operating days: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday
  • Planned service: year-round

Houston to Cartagena

  • Route: IAH–CTG
  • Planned start: December 17, 2026
  • Initial frequency: four flights per week
  • Announced operating days: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday
  • Planned service: year-round

United says it will be the first U.S. airline to offer nonstop service to Cartagena from both Houston and Washington-Dulles.

The airline already serves Bogotá and Medellín, so Cartagena expands its Colombian network to a third destination.

More United routes are planned for later in 2026

United's July 2026 network update said the airline had already launched 27 new routes in the United States and Canada during the year.

It also highlighted plans for service to five new destinations later in 2026:

  • Caracas, Venezuela
  • Cartagena, Colombia
  • Sapporo, Japan
  • St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands
  • Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Mexico

United also identified new routes to existing destinations including:

  • Chicago to Tokyo-Narita
  • Washington-Dulles to Los Cabos
  • Denver to Providenciales, Turks and Caicos
  • Houston to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

What this expansion means for travelers

The useful part of United's 2026 expansion is the number of secondary or leisure-oriented destinations gaining direct service.

That can mean:

  • fewer connections
  • shorter overall journey times
  • easier access to southern Italy and coastal Croatia
  • direct winter access to Hokkaido
  • more Caribbean and Latin American choices
  • stronger connecting options through Newark, Washington, Houston, Chicago and San Francisco

The European additions are particularly interesting for travelers who would rather arrive closer to their final destination instead of connecting through a larger European hub.

Before booking a newly announced route

Airline schedules can change between announcement and departure.

Before buying, verify:

  • the route is operating on your chosen date
  • government approval has been granted where required
  • seasonal start and end dates
  • operating days
  • aircraft assignment
  • baggage allowance
  • connection time
  • fare conditions

The airline's live booking system should always be the final reference.

Natifly Daily verdict

United Airlines' 2026 expansion is unusually broad.

Europe gained direct routes to Split, Bari, Glasgow and Santiago de Compostela, plus Washington-Reykjavik.

Japan is gaining new Chicago-Narita and San Francisco-Sapporo options.

The Americas are expanding through Caracas, Cartagena and additional Caribbean and Mexican destinations.

The strongest trend is United's willingness to serve destinations beyond the traditional international gateways.

For travelers, that can make 2026 itineraries simpler by getting them closer to where they actually want to spend their trip.
